I was part of the kickball team. I was proud of myself to getting home, since it's been YEARS since I've played kickball and dodgeball. I used to be extremely good at dodgeball...but at my high school any hit goes...and I'm used to aiming for the head, so I didn't play in case I got carried away.

Tonight is the water events part...I don't know how I feel about wearing a bathing suit in front of mostly all of greek life...it's a bit creepy to me, but if they need people to swim...I'll help.

While yesterday was warm and beautiful...today is cold and rainy. Hopefully it won't last too long! I'm ready for warmth and sunshine :) Especially for Graduation Day.

Peace, Love

LC

Greek Life

Last weekend we welcomed two new sisters to our sorority!! I helped out with registering people, before having to leave to see off friends. Our one sister Alex screenprinted our letters on the backs of our Relay shirts, so we could show support for the cause, as well as show people who we are.

That Saturday was also a dance party we attended for IGC, Phi Beta Sigma DJ'ed. It was definitely interesting to hear songs that I haven't heard since middle and high school. Overall, it was a good time.

Tuesday was St. Patty's Day...need I say more? I hope everyone had a great day that day.

In between these events, we had many quizzes and tests to study for.

Our Alumni Weekend is coming up, so we've been preparing for that great weekend. I was extremely excited, because I was at Walmart last week and I met an older sister who graduated in 1977! We've had a lot of trouble contacting older sisters from the 60's and 70's, so this is a huge breakthrough. Earlier in the year I sent out a message in our Oneonta Reflections and received emails from our Founding Sisters. It's just incredible being able to talk to these women. As a personal project, I've been recopying down our family lines, so all sisters can see who is connected to what family. I was able to trace them all the way up to 1980, so we are missing 20 years of history of our sorority. I'm really hoping to be able to trace the lines back up to our founding sisters. This project has taken me over 3 years now.

March 28th is Open House! Come visit our Pi Chi table!!

Peace, Love

LC

Community Service at its Finest

Hi Everyone!!

Break is coming, and the tests are coming in. Our new members are not only doing awesome, but they are hightailing it in the classroom. Pi Chi is working even harder this year to do well academically, as well as community service wise.

I personally work as a notetaker and do various projects with Alpha Phi Omega. But I do most of my community service with my sorority. Some projects we have lined up for Pi Delta Chi are:

"Together Against Breast Cancer" on April 25th. That is the start of our Alumni Weekend, so we are looking forward to being with our Alumni, while helping raise funds for Breast Cancer. Pi Delta Chi has been working to get funding for Breast Cancer Research for almost 50 years, so we are very excited to show our alumni that we are as dedicated and hard working as they were for this very important cause.

Phi Sigma Sigma is having a clothing drive, so our sisters will be cleaning out their closests over break to help. I unfortunetly have already given my older clothes to a clothing drive, so I won't be much help with this one.

We are in the process of setting up another Breast Cancer Benefit Concert, where live bands will be playing and all proceeds will be going to Breast Cancer Research.

In between these big events, Pi Delta Chi participated in last Saturday's Heart Walk, and will be participating in Relay for Life this upcoming March. There are some projects set up for our sisters to help at Saturday's Bread, Pathfinder Village, Habitat for Humanity, and the YMCA.

Some smaller projects then that are:
Blogging, Notetaking, Being a Spend the Night Host, and Cleaning up Hiking Trails.

To take a break and have some fun, some of our sisters will be competing in Phi Sigma Sigma's talent show.

Good luck to everyone on their tests before break starts!!

Peace, Love

LC

Superbowl Sunday and Such

Today is the big game....

or so I'm told. I'm sorry to all the sport's fans out there, but I couldn't tell you who is in the game if my life depended on it. I'm more of a "player", than a "watcher". Unless I'm playing, or someone I know is playing, I could really care less about it. We are enjoying the game with Thusa. I believe this get-together is the first in a while between our sororities, which is kinda sad, but happy it's starting back up again.

Thusa being over 111 years old, and us approaching 50 years old, we seriously are an important piece of school history. It's pretty crazy to look back at pictures and notes of past sororities and fraternities we used to do stuff with, that are no longer around. My aunt went to this college and was part of the sorority Phi Gamma Gamma. (No they did not turn into Phi Sigma Sigma) They folded I believe back in the 70's or so. I can't remember at the moment.

More about the history of greek life on campus:

I really do think something must be done about the underground greek system. Is it just me that thinks that it's not good that the underground greeks not only have more organizations, but they tend to get a lot more girls/guys? For fraternities we only have:

Chi Phi
Phi Beta Sigma
Phi Kappa Psi

Unrecognized are:
ITK
Beta Chi
Sig Nu
ZSig
Sigma Alpha Mu
Sig Tau
TKE
AEPi

Sororities recognized are:

Pi Delta Chi
Sigma Gamma Phi (Thusa)
Phi Sigma Sigma
Sigma Sigma Sigma
MSU
CUS* (still seeking recognition)

Unrecognized are:

DST
AKPhi
LEPhi
Pi Phi Delta
Sigma Phi Delta
Sigma Iota Kappa*
Pi Phi Sigma*

* sororities with this marking states that they are organizations that were created by a group of girls very recently. They have no history with the school, and have taken traditions from actual sororities.

The rest had at one point been part of the school. When kicked off campus, they changed their letters:

DST used to be the old SDT

Pi Phi Delta was DPhiE

LEPhi was AEPhi

Sigma Phi Delta was Tri Delt

It's very disparaging to me as a recognized greek to see people turn to the underground greek system. I do think that if IGC changes the age requirement, allowing first semester freshmen to pledge, that recognized can have an extra boost to those that do not wish to wait until spring to pledge. I really feel that some of these organizations would come back if given the chance, and that would be good for all parties. These sororities and fraternities used to be part of recognized greek life, and it's just really sad that as each day passes, recognized greek life doesn't have these sororities and fraternities. I think my concern is not just the pledges and what they go through, but the loss of history these organizations gave Oneonta.

Peace, Love

LC

New Members and Bid Day

This Past Friday was Greek Life's offical Bid Day.

This day is when all of Greek Life comes out to give props to each other for finding new members who believe that they have found the sorority/fraternity that fits them best. All new members are brought out for all to see, and that sorority/fraternity usually gives the new members gifts (balloons, gift bags, flowers, etc.) and picks a song to sing for them. Bid Day is always a great happy day.

We have two girls that are absolutely AMAZING. As one of the New Member Educators, I am extremely excited to be there for our new members and teach them about the sorority they have chosen.

Good Luck to all New Member Educators and New Members!!

Peace, Love

LC

Spring 09 Recruitment

Hello all!!!

I hope everyone had a great break :) It's that time of year again for recruitment!! But we're still having fun :)

The other night was Oneonta's 7th Annual Mr. and Mrs. Oneonta Pageant.

The room was packed with spectators. The evening started off with Hooked on Tonics. They sang 4 songs and had 4 soloists. They sounded classy and their harmony and melody was excellent. There were 28 contestants ranging from greek life to clubs who walked out to show off their casual wear before the three judges.

Then Andrew Horn came out and sang 2 songs. His tone was beautiful and he was very skilled on the guitar. When he was finished, the contestants came back out in their formal wear and then did their question and answer section. Then while the judges deliberated, Voices of Serenity came out to sing. They sang 3 songs and there were 2 soloists. I enjoy gospel music, so I thought they did a beautiful job.

Then the winners were annouced:

2nd runner up for the men was: Darren Daniels
2nd runner up for the women was: Brittany Thomas

1st runner up for the men was: Gavin Kelly
1st runner up for the women was: Mecalya Murphy

Mr. Oneonta State was: Jordan Haily
Mrs. Oneonta State was: Chi Upsilon Sigma (Her name was very long and I didn't want to butcher her name) I'm sorry!!

Friday, most of us will be heading home to enjoy great food and be around our families. We are also beginning to come up with ideas for our banner for the big Battle of the Red Dragons banner contest. And teachers want their say, so I'm sure I am not the only one who will be taking tests and doing A LOT of homework before break. I personally have a conference to attend this weekend, though it is only on Sat. and is being held at Cornell University, it's still a lot to do.

On another note, I must say I am CRAZY happy that the election is over. 2 years= wayyyyy too long. In my one class we all agreed that the election should only be 4 months and that's it. And I'm sad that this election wasn't as fun as the last. I'm not upset that my guy lost, a party can't win them all and I always thought no matter who won it would be interesting. I am so proud though that so many people went out and voted. I am also happy that Obama won with plenty of enough votes and electoral votes. It's always a nasty buisness when bad things happen ( like the Gore VS Bush election) It just turns people nasty and we don't need that. So it's done and let's move on as a country and fix ourselves up :)

Peace, Love

LC

Hallow Weekend!!

Tonite is trick or treatin in the halls!! It was so much fun so watch one of my favorite shows in live action. There were 4 teams, 3 teams were decided upon and the 4th team was created by a drawing of a ticket. One of my sisters Melanie was on team IGC (Inter Greek Council) and they won!! The first place team won some money and digital cameras, and I believe the 2nd place team won iPod shuffles. I'm really impressed that Phi Beta Sigma got as close as they could to how Family Feud is. They had this program that was shown on a big screen, it was really really awesome. The only problem I had was when they hit the lights we couldn't really see the contestents anymore, but they did a great thing for a great cause. :)

After reading Alex's blog I did want to add into this blog that NO ONE should EVER take juicycampus seriously. I went on it myself and all I saw was anger and hatred and it was mostly about unrec. sororities and fraternities. I wish we could be taken off the list, but until then, I hope that no one will look at that and believe that Greek Life is like that.

Other events that are coming up are This Tues. is Charity Denim, which all proceeds go to Breast Cancer Research, Phi Sigma Sigma is hosting a Kidney Walk that all Greek Life will be attending, All Greek Life will be hosting a Halloween Carnival up at Hunt at the Waterfront.

Peace, Love

LC

Freedom of Speech

Today was a classic showing of freedom of speech. My fiance came running into my room about noon out of breath and pulled me out of my seat to follow him. He and his roommate were really excited and told me that there was a protest going on in the quad and that there was a counter protest going on as well. I have to say I was really impressed that so many students came out to show their support and showed that they cared.

It started when a guy and a girl stood in the quad and help up signs that basically said that anyone who was a homosexual needs to stop being a homosexual and embrace god. Students and faculty members came out and brought out their own signs that shined "God made me gay or bisexual" or "God loves everyone". I was also impressed that both sides were peaceful and that things did not get out of hand. In a way, I believe that this man and women helped bring students and faculty together and show that they believe in themselves and that they believe in who they are as a person, and I just proud of everyone.

I myself believe that God loves everyone and no one is better or worse than anyone. Good job to everyone today who showed their support and stood up for what they believed in.

Peace, Love

LC

Breast Cancer

We are doing two charity events to help raise money for breast cancer research :)

Our first event is charity denim which will be held on Oct. 21st from 10am to 6pm at Hunt in the ballroom. I'm sick and tired of anyone who is against Bush or the Republican party think that they can say anything they want, but anyone who is for the positive U.S.A. we get slammed and silenced.

**This is what I believe, this is not the opinion of Pi Delta Chi**

I have no problem admitting that I voted for John McCain. It was not only simple, it was easy. I didn't have to waste my time listening to political ads, or what they've been saying on TV. I didn't have to listen to what the liberal media had to say either. All I had to do, was see what both candidates have done while in office. Do I hate Obama? No, def not. Do I think he's prepared to become our president? No, def. not. He has no experience. Any moron can have good people skills and say "I promise to do this, and I promise to do that". I could stand up and say "I will make a great Math teacher." But if I don't have the experience....how can I be? Didn't the democrats say that if they grabbed the house and senate that they would get gas prices down and there wouldn't be anymore deficit spending? We are given so many promises...and people believe it...it's amazing. I don't understand it. Get a piece of paper out and write what Obama and McCain have done while they have been in office. What bills have passed with their signatures on it. Once you do that....it's really clear who is and is not fit to be our president.

Again, I have no major issue with Obama, I think some of his ideas may work...if he had more experience and more on his resume on how to help our country, I would give him more of a look. People don't need to be nasty about the election. I have no problems with anyone who does vote for Obama..but I think people need to respect each other for what they believe is right. I respect people for voting, and voting for what they believe in. Others need to extend that same courtesy. People with different opinions can learn from each other...all you need to do is just listen. Ignore the crap that both parties are spewing about each other. Go out and vote for what you believe in.

LC

Breast Cancer Month

Our philanthropy is Breast Cancer Research, and this is the one month when the whole nation really gets together to help with this disease. Last week was National Hazing Prevention Week. We usually have a guest speaker and other activities that athletics and Greek Life attend. The speaker did a great job at getting his point across that chapters can do other things to help pledge classes bond.

We also went to a program that our Greek Peer Avocates put on. We watched video clips about people getting food or liquids or other things dumped or thrown on them. I am excited since we have potentials (no I won't tell you the number). Earlier in the week we had our philanthropy tables set up in the quad to promote what we are raising money for.

This past weekend Pi Delta Chi and Rock the Cure held a benefit concert for Cancer and Breast Cancer research. It was held at Sake Club and it went very well. We raised over $200 and 100% of it will be sent to Breast Cancer research. In Oct. we will be hosting Charity Denim which will also be going to Breast Cancer research.

On Sunday was Meet the Greeks. All the Sororities and Fraternities showed their support for each other and listened as each chapter explained who they are and what they do.

So I wish everyone the best of luck for the split class!!

Do something. All in all, I believe they did a great job at helping others give the respect to those that fought, died, and felt pain of all kinds on that horrible day.

Afterwards, another one of our fraternities hosted an event to promote awareness of homeless people...it was great fun to hang out with other fraternities and sororities and show our support for those that are less fortunate than we are. That is a very good question. It is also interesting to hear the stories some people pick up that they believe is true about Greek Life.

My biggest reason for joining a sorority was that I felt I needed to learn how to communicate better with females, and what better way to do so by joining an organization that is made up of just females. I grew up being the only female in my neighborhood. Of course I have a mother and aunts, but they weren't the same as females who are my peers. So while most girls were playing with dolls, I was playing tackle football and man hunt.

It took me quite a few years to become more "girly", since I was for the most part a "tomboy". Even when I got to college I was given signs that I don't communicate well with my own sex. I would hit others (not hard) but playful and there was some friction since I thought I was showing affection while others thought I was being mean. Also, by growing up with guys, I don't play games with other people. Nor do I like when people try to play games with me, especially mind games. We all know how a group of girls get when one or more doesn't like another girl. I can't stand that type of stuff, so I usually just stuck to hanging around guys, since when you are with guys you know where you stand in the group heirarchy.

But in college I knew this would be my last chance to work on it before I would head out into the real world. So I decided a sorority was what I needed. I did my research on who the recognized sororities were. I never thought to join an unrecognized since they are unrecognized for a reason and whether or not they walked off campus or were kicked off, I still would never consider it. Of course everyone is different and I would never hold it against anyone who did join unrecognized, but that wasn't the path I was looking for.

Of course by talking to active members you get a completely different story at times on how their particular pledging process occurs, so I thought it would be best to just listen to pledges. It was really easy to hear pledges in my classes and most of the stories were pretty horrible and I would sit there and think to myself "Why the hell are you letting people do that to you?!" I am a strong person and I would NEVER let myself to be hazed by anyone. I promised myself if any group tried to haze me, I would just leave. I know who I am and where I want to go in life and I don't need people to try and pull me down and treat me badly. So that knocked a lot of sororities out of my book, including one in particular since at the time my one friend was pledging and as the weeks flew by, I steadily saw her dissintigrating before my eyes. She was doing worse in school, she looked like hell, and I just would shake my head.

By the time spring came, I was at a loss. In a way I wanted to join a very big sorority, but I knew I can be very individualistic. I enjoy being in groups, but other times I just want to be by myself. I also didn't want to fail out of my major or school. But then one of my friends in my major was wearing letters one day and I asked her what group she was part of, and her reply was "Pi Delta Chi. We are the best sorority ever." I didn't remember seeing it on the Oneonta web page, so later that day I checked it out. It was a lot smaller than all the others, but I was intrigued. The next day in class I asked her more about it and her first description was "We don't haze." That was a big plus in my book, and the second was, since she was also in my major and pledged, then I could do it too. She brought me to a rush party to meet the other girls and it was amazing. They weren't in my face to pledge, they didn't even ask me about it. They spent more time trying to get to know me and I felt so much at ease. Then I went to another one of their socials and decided that I found my fit.

Of course I can't talk about certain things that occured during my pledging process since that is part of joining is the bond of sisterhood and commitment, but I will atest that I was never hazed, therefore I bonded with every single one of my sisters and hold no grudges or resentments against anyone. In fact, I've invited all my sisters to my wedding and my big sister is one of my bridesmaids. They also made the pledge process flow well with my schedule and if something didn't fit, they just moved stuff around to make sure that I got my academics done. I was in bed by 10:30pm, and I had an amazing time. Also, since my sorority is smaller, I seriously know all my sisters. I know their likes and dislikes (and I'm not talking about favorite drink or least favorite drink). I know them and they know me, and to me, THAT is sisterhood.

We are not the best because we are the oldest, we are the oldest because we are the best.

Peace, Love

LC

The Beginning

Hello to all,

As my first post I wish you welcome. This blog is for anyone who is interested in joining a sorority, or just interested in general about sororities and finding out what Greek Life is all about.

To tell you a little more about myself, I've been a Pi Delta Chi sister since Spring 07'. Becoming a sister was one of the best decisions I have made in college. Not only have I found life long friends, but I went from just having two brothers, to having over 30 sisters. It is an amazing experience and I hope any potential sorority sister finds their niche as I have.

Peace, Love

LC
